Half Marathon, Santa Cruz, CA

Race times:

Megan = 2 hr 3 min 46 sec

Jon = 1 hr 50 min 50 sec

Megan set a goal last fall to run a half marathon, her longest distance run to date, before turning 31. She also convinced me to join her. We started training in early November 2016 and the race wasn’t scheduled until April 2017, so we had plenty of time.

Some training run highlights:

Our San Diego week for Thanksgiving had us running some early ~5 mile runs on the waterfront path along Mission and Pacific beaches.

A late January trip back to CO and some snowy path miles through Cherry Creek State Park near Megan’s parent’s house.

For me, February included work travel to Detroit MI and Paris France, both getting me out in completely new areas.

For our long runs we tried to get out to new areas including a few around the Sanford campus and one in SF from Fisherman’s Wharf across the Golden Gate Bridge and back (a part of my birthday weekend).

Shoreline and the surrounding sloughs¹ became our default for lunchtime (me only) and weekend long runs when we didn’t have a destination. It is generally a great place to run and we had quite a few coffee breaks at the Shoreline Cafe after these runs. It was also after a run here that I decided to take their sailing test and we took out a 13.5′ sloop for the first time.

I made this collage of the GPS traces of my runs. I haven’t been on a run since the race. It is currently 6/7/17.
