August 23, 2021:
[P1] Megan woke me early in the morning around 3am and said it was time to go have a baby, her water had broken an hour earlier. We sprung into action, though with a tiny bit less apprehension than the first time with Jane. After a long day but mostly typical delivery Max Thomas Cosgrove was born. Birth specifications are as follows:
Length: 50.8 cm (1′ 8”)
Weight: 3.15 kg (6 lb 15.1 oz)
Head Circumference: 36 cm (14.17”)
Apgar One: 9.0
Apgar Five: 9.0
Gestation Age: 39 2/7 wks
[S1] Having another baby was the goal, so that we could round out the family and give Jane a sibling. There are a lot of factors that go into any pregnancy. Luckily for us Megan didn’t have any issues getting pregnant. Recently I’ve noticed that it’s really hard for many to get pregnant. This one was a little different than Jane, mostly because we are so busy keeping up with Jane already. The pregnancy passed quickly and even since Max has been here life just keeps rushing on by.
I’m so excited to spend the next few years with Max. Our marriage is strong, there’s no doubt about that. I don’t think we will fight at all, I will always protect his needs, and I’m sure that Max will always be the perfect son and brother. We have worked hard to build a family of our own, and together we’ll take care of Max. It’s been such an intense year yet so much fun and rewarding.
My biggest concern going into this pregnancy was whether I would be able to handle being a father to a son. I didn’t know I would be able to. I’m going to have to take that and move on.
Two and a half years ago we were just getting our feet wet with Jane, but now we have a littleboy. We made it through a lot of hard times together and I know that we will make it through this one as well. I’m sure we will continue to do our best not to let our fears be too much for us.
I’m so proud of what Megan and I have accomplished, and so happy that we have a little boy as well who we get to see is still grow and learn.
[P2] One of the most surprising things about having Max thus far has been the change in how I see Jane. Before Max was born I thought of Jane as part baby, part little toddler. Since moment we brought Max home and introduced him to Jane, I now only see her as a growing little girl. It actually made me a bit sad, but also excited to see how far she has come, and how smart and caring she is.
[S1] There is an important lesson to be taken away from this, which is to never underestimate a little girl. Jane and Max’s story reminds me that it is always important to love your little girl no matter how big or small she becomes. Whether she is a toddler or a teenager. [S2] I am so happy about all the amazing things she has accomplished!
[S4][P3…] I’m also happy that we’ve learned that Max wants to be held, and that he wants to eat. I’m really hoping that he’ll be able to take care of his own food and clean his own things, but right now he is a little fragile and needs to be held. He’s been so much better about it since he’s been older and since Megan has been home from the hospital after her experience with pre-eclampsia.
[P3…]When we originally checked into the hospital prior to delivery Megan’s blood pressure was a bit heigh, about 138/100. It was borderline for pre-eclampsia all through the delivery but recovered to normal levels after Max came. Then following our discharge and trip home, we saw it spike and we all began what turned out to be two more hospital admissions for a total of four additional nights. It was very tough taking care of Max at night without Megan around, and Jane was stressed knowing that something wasn’t right with Megan being gone. [S1.1] He’s much more stable now though, and it’s really nice to see him do something so simple and so positive for himself.
I’ve taken him for a walk once or twice in the past couple of days, and so far they’ve just been me and him together. We did that last night, and it was good. He was acting like a normal human, and I was able to hold him, and talk to him, and he was just really happy. I’m definitely glad he’s getting bigger and doesn’t cry, thrash and burp as much as he did a few weeks ago.
[S2.1] As Megan recovered we were able to make an appointment to get her checked in to the same hospital we had been at for the first two nights, so we could get a complete picture of what was happening medically. This visit gave us some insight into the cause of the high blood pressure and we were able to bring the blood pressure down to a more reasonable level.
[S2.3] We were lucky to have a hospital that was able to help us through it. Thanks to the nurses and doctors at the hospital they were able to get Megan to a normal weight and blood pressure level, and we all enjoyed our time back at home.
Overall Max seems to be doing well. He’s gaining weight and getting some baby like rolls on his face and legs, and he seems to be handling his gas and burps better than the first few weeks, which were pretty rough. Jane often sings him twinkle twinkle little star which she knows start to finish now, and does all kinds of other sweet sisterly things for him. Today for example Megan and I overheard her just talking to Max like he was any other little kid while they were both in the grass alone. It’s been pretty cool to see that kind of thing.
I’m very happy that everything is on track now, everyone is healthy, and we’re getting into a new routine. And I’m excited to see how different Max may be from Jane as he grows up.
